Sexual Assault and Harassment in the United States Military
We are four students at Northern Illinois University, Meshia, Javier, Keyshaun and Sarah. In our women's studies class, we have been assigned an action research project. The purpose of this project is choose a current issue that deals with women and gender. We are intended to work with a community partner and create an action to confront our issue. As a group we chose to discuss the issue of sexual assault and harassment in the United States Military. One in three women in the military have been victims of sexual assault. The harassment and assault that occurs in the U.S. military is an epidemic that is deep-rooted in misogyny and our culture that prizes masculinity. Victims are extraordinarily vulnerable to sexism and blatant victim-blaming. Conversely, offenders are protected by the legal system within the military are very rarely held accountable for their actions. This ongoing problem has an effect on males, females, and the solidity of the military. The purpose of this website is to raise awareness of this oft-ignored issue and help bring more attention to the subject and better support those affected by this.
